How should modern backup solution looks like?

The strategy for backup should be well thought out and take into account risks depending on the severity of the failure. In other words, you will need to go beyond the simple static accumulation of snapshots and figure out how to ensure the integrity and operability of data throughout their life cycle and protect the infrastructure of the enterprise from failures.

A modern backup strategy should:

• become a key part of the design of new services;

• provide a complete picture of the data in different systems and environments up to the last seconds preceding the emergency situation;

• have a recovery mechanism capable of instantly recovering a picture of data from any fragment.

When choosing backup recovery tools, enterprises need to look for solutions that work until the last second before an accident. But a complete backup recovery and resilience strategy should go far beyond this, and many companies have begun to understand this: in the future, 94% of companies plan to increase investment in resilience tools.

A successful backup strategy is a product of interaction between the parties

In addition, CIOs need to understand that backup is one of the components of a broader set of technologies, which includes the office IT infrastructure for migration to the cloud, data availability, cybersecurity, disaster recovery, and more. Planning and successfully implementing a backup and recovery strategy requires consistency between different teams. It is needed in order to determine the degree of importance of the backed up data, their sources, the frequency of preservation depending on the needs of clients.

The backup strategy should also take into account the interests of business customers, that is, not affect the quality of the services provided to them. Backup should no longer be considered as a repository of static states of the IT infrastructure. The modern approach is more mobile, and disaster recovery is considered as a key part of the data infrastructure of new services, which should provide for the per-second preservation of a continuously changing picture of data in all types of systems and environments and, if necessary, it can be easily reproduced. With such a tool, organizations will be able to gain the trust of customers, who will no longer fear for the safety of their data and express their dissatisfaction with the quality of the services provided.
