FTP connection errors and their solutions

All FTP server responses are sorted into groups, the response itself consists of 3 digits, each digit in the code carries its own meaning depending on the position.

421 Too many connections

Description

The very name of the error translates as “too many connections” and indicates that the maximum number of simultaneous connections to the FTP account has been reached. In most cases, the error occurs due to many stale sessions that have not been closed.

Solution

Go to your hosting control panel and close unnecessary opening sessions. You can also reduce the number of simultaneous connections directly via the FTP client and change the transfer mode to passive.

530 Login Incorrect

Description

The error is related to the FTP server's refusal to authorize the user. Occurs when entering incorrect or invalid connection data.

Solution

The first thing to do is to verify the FTP user's connection parameters. Also, make sure that no spaces or third-party characters were specified when typing. If something happens, try changing your password through the hosting control panel and reconnecting with a new password.

If the data is entered incorrectly, your IP address may be blocked, so if you are not 100% sure of the correctness of the data, do not enter it several times so as not to receive a block.

Connection Timed Out

Description

Indicates that the FTP client has timed out a response from the server. When connecting, the FTP-client waits for a response from the server for a specified time, if the response has not been sent, an error message is displayed. There can be many reasons for this: problems with the Internet connection, an inappropriate low value for timed out, or the server blocking your IP address.

Solution

First, try to connect again, if the error remains, first check the stability of your network equipment and the availability of the Internet. Increase the values ​​for timed out, this will give the server more time to form a response. To remove the block, contact the technical support of your hosting provider.

425 Can't build data connection

Description

Unable to open data connection. An FTP connection has been established, but communication is not possible. A common reason is using the FTP program in active mode. Passive mode is safer for the client. It is recommended to use it if you have configured Firewall rules to avoid such errors.

Solution

Change the connection mode to passive. If you want to work with the active mode, you need to configure the FTP client and open ports for this according to its documentation.

AUTH TLS. Error: Could not connect to server

Description

An error related to connection problems through an encrypted channel. There is a common filezilla FTP client error. This error can occur for a number of reasons, from an incorrectly installed certificate and its absence, to not maintaining the installed certificate by Filezilla itself.

Solution

Disable the use of TLS. In the Filezilla connection settings, in the “Encryption” column, set Only use Plain FTP. If the choice of the client is not essential, as an option, change the FTP client. Alternatively, we can recommend WinSCP.
