A 404 error (also known as HTTP 404 or 404) is a very specific type of client error. This means that the page the visitor is trying to open cannot be found on the server.
What causes the 404 error?
There can actually be many reasons why your site is returning a 404 error.
- You will receive a 404 error if you recently deleted pages from your site without redirecting their URLs.
- 404 error can also occur if you have restarted or transferred your domain and were unable to redirect all old URLs to the new site.
- Sometimes the 404 error can be the result of changing the page url. Changing any part of the URL, be it the category name or the page title, will result in a 404 error.

Site crawlers are a great way to quickly find broken links that lead to 404 errors.
Ways to fix 404 error
Redirecting 404 Error: Redirecting users to another relevant page is the easiest way to fix 404 errors on your site. Just make sure you redirect them to something relevant and don't just send them back to your homepage.
Rebuild the page. If you find that there is still a lot of demand for the deleted page and there is no suitable page to redirect users, consider restoring the original page.
Fix the link: If your site has broken links, you can simply edit the link to point to the correct URL.
Create a 404 page: By creating a custom 404 page, you can be sure that your visit will not be wasted.
Create a unique page with a 404 error code
Experts strongly recommend creating a unique page with a 404 error code for your site. Most of the standard 404 error messages are too technical for the average user to understand, and they do not help him find another relevant page. With a unique 404 page, you will help users find the information they are looking for.
Many companies use a custom 404 error page to reinforce their brand image and add even a little humor. Creating a custom URL page also makes it easier to track 404 errors in Google Analytics. However, don't overdo it. A clean and understandable 404 page is much more effective than an overly complex page.
If you have a website, 404 errors are inevitable. But there is no reason to let them harm your site and lower your rankings. Use the strategies and tools above to run checks regularly to find 404 errors and fix them quickly. The sooner you fix them, the less harm they do.
