The growing complexity of personal cloud server as a new information security issue

IDC analysts outlined the main issues that organizations will face in 2019 and explained why clouds and hyperconvergence can be sources of additional difficulties and risks. According to estimates, in 2020 more bytes will be stored in personal cloud servers than on all consumer devices in the world. In 2022, more bytes will be stored in the clouds than in corporate systems around the world, and this increases the complexity, since all this data must be protected.

According to IDC Director for Security Products Rob Westervelt, the company's research revealed three main data security issues:

1. the growing sophistication of attacks. Not only enterprises, but also cybercriminals are investing in complex analytics;

2. the increasing security risks associated with the spread of clouds. Companies surveyed by IDC reported that the main problem is the integration of the security functions provided by cloud providers with security tools already deployed in enterprises;

3. the increasing complexity of security solutions. Not only do organizations encounter difficulty moving into the clouds. Additional difficulties are created by the security technologies themselves, which makes it difficult for many organizations to properly use security policies.

Data protection difficulties

The problem is that in a multi-cloud environment there are often uncoordinated, poorly controlled mechanisms for applying policies. Often used by enterprises policy management tools were created for their own data centers and are now expanding, causing problems. In many cases, such problems lead to a change in technology.

61% of organizations surveyed by IDC reported that they changed data security technologies or policies at least once in connection with the transition to the cloud. The reasons were gaps in personal cloud server platforms and the lack of links between their functions, the need to comply with regulatory requirements and ensure data quality.

Westervelt believes that the industry needs to increase the interoperability of data protection tools and automatic controls that will be added when data is downloaded or exchanged. In general, shared telemetry tools are needed for various technologies that will prevent inconsistency and reduce data complexity.
