ICANN works to recognizing internationalized names in China process

We have already described one of the ICAAN initiatives related to lifelong allocation of a domain name. This article focuses on addressing the problem of universal acceptance of any domains and email addresses is one of the strategic priorities of ICANN's activities for the years 2021-2025. One of the key regions on which the success of this work depends is China with its huge number of non-English-speaking Internet users. Providing them with the opportunity to use the global network in their native languages will be an important step towards turning the Internet into a truly international and multilingual environment.

Jan Chuan Ren, who heads the PRC representation office at ICANN, spoke on the corporate blog about the first of a series of presentations on IDN / UA issues. It was held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou as part of the Chinese Forum on the Development and Use of Domain Names. The event was organized by the Network Information Center of China (CNNIC), the Department of Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) of Zhejiang Province and the Information Center for Computer Networks of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. More than 200 people took part in the presentation.

The meeting participants came to the conclusion that more active participation of government and state structures of the PRC in addressing the issues of universal recognition of internationalized domains and email addresses is an urgent need. Also, there was talk of a broad educational work at the level of ordinary users and active interaction with Chinese IT-companies. Over the coming year, presentations on IDN / UA issues will be held in four more cities of the PRC.
