Rules How to try to protect your personal data online?
Most of us share personal information online every day. From emails and phone numbers to photos and videos. This data is especially attractive for those who want to use it for illegal purposes. However, there are ways to control your content and prevent any abuse or fraud. Below are some basic guidelines for protecting online privacy. By adhering to these rules you can feel more comfortable in the virtual world.
Do not store information in a public repository.
Every day, a large amount of data is exchanged over the Internet. However, some methods of such data exchanges may open access to hacking. Most often, attacks target public storage facilities, such as Google Docs or Dropbox. These are certainly convenient services for storing and transferring data to other users, but they are not suitable for storing confidential information, such as passwords, bank cards or any other personal information.
Pay particular attention to password strength.
Passwords directly protect your data from unauthorized persons. However, it is not enough to have only one password for all accounts, because such passwords will help to open your confidential information to hackers. First of all, use long passwords consisting of 12 or more characters, which include letters and numbers. Use different login passwords for different platforms, social networks, services, etc. For easy storage of passwords, use the password manager and, of course, do not keep them online.
Do not disclose your primary email address and phone number.
Using email and phone numbers in public places on the Internet leads to a lot of spam. For example, if you have to share this information with online stores, avoid sharing it with random users, such as subscribers and friends on social networks. You can also purchase an additional phone number so that you can turn it off when you do not need it, to avoid unwanted calls.
Be careful with Wi-Fi networks.
If you want to create a private network from public Wi-Fi, you should consider using a VPN to ensure anonymity on the Internet. A virtual private network or VPN protects your network activity from snooping. This is very convenient when you are connected to a public network in a cafe, park or any other place offering this service. A secure VPN connection provides maximum data protection and helps to avoid situations when unauthorized people use your data.
