Delta Electronics has demonstrated how to build "green" data centers

Delta Electronics supported by the American Green Building Council, has developed and built data center with LEED v4 ID + C Gold certification in Wujiang City (China). Delta's goal is to create eco buildings wherever it operates. During past ten years, the company has built 26 such DCs in different countries.

The DC’s space in Wujiang is only 135 m², but it handles the company's critical corporate data: mission systems and applications, mail, and business process management. The USGBC LEED environmental certificates are recognized as the most authoritative in the world. The main goal was to minimize the quantity of physical servers, while meeting the growing demand for IT services and reduce energy consumption. Using virtualization has increased resource efficiency, simplified system management and allowed for greater flexibility from the traditional configuration.

One of the objectives was a clear demonstration of the company's advanced technology to customers, which required centralization of resources. There are many parameters you have to take into account when intigrationg DC’s infrastructure into the office building, such as available space, height, as well as the presence and number of exterior windows, electricity system, physical security aspects.

Delta engineering group put special attention on 4 points: power supply, air conditioning, racks and a monitoring system. The data center was divided into an isolated cold zone and a hot zone with 24 racks. Within five years, power consumption in the data center will reach 140 kW. Delta has deployed its own hardware and energy-efficient solutions at the data center in Wujiang. According to the LEED criteria, the choice of location and transport accessibility, energy consumption, as well as the efficiency of water consumption were highly appreciated.

UPS Modulon series is used in the power system of the data center. These are fully modular devices with up to 95% AC-AC conversion efficiency. Hot swapping of power modules provides an opportunity to upgrade the data center in the long term without interruption of service. The power distribution cabinet located in the rack also has a modular design. This helped to increase the quantity of hot-swappable output breakers to 40.
