Dedicated servers against clouds: when it is better to use

Despite the fact that technically the cloud provides rapid computational loads and an equally rapid scaling of storage, for many companies there are good reasons for purchasing and installing local servers.

Throughput. If an enterprise is engaged in commercial activities that involve access to cloud servers with high bandwidth (for example, video editing or streaming of images from video cameras) then it is critical for it to upload the data to the cloud and download it back. In this case the local servers is able to transfer data at speeds up to 10 Gbit / s, look much better than clouds.

Confidentiality and jurisdiction. Most cloud providers provide multi-level protection for customers, but it is clear that no protection guarantees data security to the extent that it is located in its own data center.

The work of local applications. Most enterprises have a fleet of legacy applications, and a local server running on the corporate network is the best way to expand their capabilities.

Control. Unlike the lease of cloud capacities, the installation of servers does not require an extended set of options for their upgrade: they can deliver or change hard disks, increase the amount of memory, change the processor to a newer one, or reinstall the software.

About Internet Service Providers

In addition to software configuration of office servers, there may be a problem with the connection to the network. It will not be sensitive if you need to access shared files on the internal network, but if you use a local Internet-enabled server to host web pages or e-mail (or any other application), then user data requests should be passed through the firewall. Connection details are best discussed with an Internet Service Provider (ISP), which can close the transfer of data through certain ports.

A separate consideration is the issue of obtaining a fixed IP address, setting up dynamic DNS routing, forwarding and routing ports to send data to the machine on the local network, especially if it hosts websites or it works as a mail server.
