Payment of a domain name on the website of a registrar does not mean that an individual or company acquires exclusive rights to the chosen combination of characters. The minimum term for a domain name is one year, the maximum depends on the policies of the registrar. Initial registration of a domain involves an annual renewal of the contract between the supplier and the tenant.

International domain zones (.COM, .BIZ, .MOBI, .TEL, .AERO, etc.) allow you to conclude a ten-year contract for the use of a web name. The terms for acquiring domain access for a shorter period are determined by the service provider.

Conclusion of a contract with a registrar

The domain life is counted from the moment of conclusion of the contract between the user and the registrar. The name status in whois changes to registered (registered), a line appears in the profile with the date of release of the combination of characters leased by the client. The duration of the stage is determined by the duration of the contract. The document reflects the lifetime of the domain: from 1 year to 10 years.

The user of the web name can renew the contract with the registrar 60 days before the expiration. During this period, the tenant receives notifications from the service provider about the possible terms of the new contract.

Within thirty days after the end of the contract, the administrator can use the option of preferential renewal of rights to the domain name. It is activated by the registrar in the absence of actions to renegotiate the contract from the client.

Priority contract renewal

The period of preferred renewal of a domain is 30 days on average (depends on the domain zone). The whois service will show the change in the status of the web name to expired (expired). A site hosted at this address becomes unavailable. Mail located on a domain stops working.

Access recovery

If the domain name was not renewed during the period of preferential renewal, the registrar provides an opportunity to return the domain name within 30 days.
