Five Top Issues After Migrating to the Cloud
Here are five key issues that can arise after migration to the clouds and which every organization should be prepared to solve.
1. Organizational and operational change management. Often the main difficulty is not technology, but people and processes that must adapt to it. Employees of all departments should be involved from the very beginning in the implementation of migration, although the degree and nature of their participation will be different.
Change management, consistent with other transformational shifts in IT, is critical to successful cloud migration. If you focus only on technology, it will lead to unsatisfactory results.
2. Unloading of equipment and unforeseen expenses. After migration, enterprises must take action to get the most out of cloud solutions. Cloud flexibility can be a huge advantage. But clouds need to be managed to avoid problems such as part-time equipment loading, unforeseen expenses, increased risks and violation of regulatory requirements.
3. Testing. It is of the utmost importance, helping to avoid unexpected gaps in business processes, problems with future scaling, server failures and errors in the DBMS. More importantly, testing ensures that applications run smoothly in the new cloud environment.
Testing must take various forms during and after the migration process, including security, integration, and performance testing. It should be carried out continuously. Since applications need to be modified and updated, tests should be conducted accordingly.
4. Security. Due to the fact that data theft is frighteningly frequent, concerns about cloud security are well-founded. Transferring control of confidential and proprietary data to someone else is a difficult test for nerves.
To reduce security concerns after migration, make sure your cloud provider provides strong authentication, user identity management, and access control. If you are using a hybrid cloud environment, your IT department should focus on the physical protection of the entire environment and databases.
5. Downtime. With proper protection and monitoring, the likelihood of downtime is reduced, but the problem is not completely resolved. And downtime is expensive. According to Gartner, an average of $ 5.6 thousand per minute.
To avoid downtime, consider creating a multi-cloud environment spaced across multiple geographic locations with adequate disaster recovery, backup, and accessibility strategies. Having multiple locations increases resilience and significantly reduces the risk of downtime.
