General Domain Transfer Rules

General domain registration rules

The domain name should consist only of letters of the Latin alphabet or numbers. Intermediate characters in the domain name can be letters of the Latin alphabet, numbers or hyphens.

A domain name cannot begin or end with a hyphen.

A domain cannot be registered to a reserved name (each zone has its own list of reserved names).

The length of the domain name to the point must be: at least 3 characters to the point for the zones .biz, .info, .mobi, .name or at least 2 characters to the point for the other zones.

When checking a domain using the Whois service, we often encounter different domain statuses. What do they mean? Consider the most common:

Active, OK or OK-UNTIL - A successfully registered domain name. This status is usually set after domain registration. Indicates that the domain can already be used.

HOLD, clientHold, Hold-Since or Frozen - the domain is suspended. Transfer and changes are prohibited. Set for 27-30 days in case of non-payment for renewal.

Transfer is a transfer of a domain from one registrar to another

It must be 60 days from the date of registration or the last transfer of the domain to the current registrar. This is an ICANN requirement.

2 weeks is the minimum desirable period that remains until the domain expiration date. The transfer process is automatic and lasts depending on the domain zone from several hours to 7 days inclusive.

Before starting a domain transfer, check the WHOIS database. Often, for security reasons, the domain is indicated with the status of blocking from transfer (REGISTRAR-LOCK) and the contact information (Privacy Protection) is closed.
